Took me a while to figure this out, but since I was adaerly using with-zlib-dir I needed to specify the openssl option with a comma like this:rvm install 1.9.2 -C with-zlib-dir=$rvm_home/usr, with-openssl-dir=$rvm_home/usr

I don’t think you have to, but that’s what RVM suggests to do in the install notes.
